Project description:The Perinatal HIV Research Unit, under the auspices of Wits University, is one of the largest AIDS research centres in Africa, and includes work in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission, vaccine trials, HIV prevention methods, and research into the best treatment, care and support practices for people living with AIDS.

Further project information:The Perinatal unit is a world leader in HIV and AIDS research. The unit was founded in 1994 by directors James McIntyre and Glenda Gray. The unit has won the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights (2002) and the Heroes in Medicine Award from the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (2003).
PHRU has been conducting research since 1996. Initially the focus was on prevention of mother-to-child transmission, however this has expanded in recent years.
Currently, PHRU conducts bio-medical research in HIV covering prevention, treatment and care. In addition, HIV and AIDS related research is conducted to inform these initiatives.
The areas of research are listed below:
Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), couples counselling and community based VCT, a focus on men and prevention, new prevention approaches including diaphragm interventions and HIV vaccine trials and initiatives aimed towards adolescents.
PMTCT, paediatric and adult treatment, household treatment studies, resistance studies, clinical trials, adherence and resistance.
Comprehensive care and support, opportunistic and other infections, depression, HIV and tuberculosis clinical epidemiology, novel TB prevention regimens, rural and urban models, children.
HIV and AIDS related research:
Behavioural and anthropological studies on masculinity and men’s sexual behaviour, living with and dying of AIDS, and traditional medicine; household surveys investigating health and economic impact; research into adherence to antiretroviral treatment; HIV and AIDS and the media.
